Ever Wonder Why?
Sometimes there are things that we question throughout the day (and night), but how many of us find our answers?
Here is where I will share the things I've wondered about and the answers that I found, some might surprise you...
(Later you will find useful search engines and resources, along with suggestions to improve your research.)
Why Do Bugs Spiral Towards Lights?
Often times I've wondered why bugs tend to spiral out of control into lights, similar to a plane on a crash landing. Why on earth would it make this dive that could result in it's very death?
The answer lies within the way bugs actually see. They use the sun (during the day) and the moon (at night, although this is actually indirect sunlight) as their light source. Both eyes receive the signals. What happens, then, when one of these bugs sees our wonderful outdoor lights? Their eyes play tricks on them. One eye sees our light and the bug's brain gets it to beat it's wing even faster, all the while the other eye sees less light (or a different amount), and results in the brain beating that wing slower. Different amounts of light received by the bugs brain determines the speed it beats it's individual wings. One wing beating faster than the other, causes this downward spiral.
Kinda cool huh?
